Updated on August 13, 2015

The RMS Queen Mary's History From Launch To Docking At Long Beach, CA and How You Can Rent A Cabin On This Famous Ship

My son, Liam, stayed on this ship with his grandparents in March, 2008. He had a FANTASTIC time and has become a bit of a Queen Mary afficionado. I've let him put together this lens to let you see if staying on this legendary liner might be of interest to you - as well as show off a bit of his knowledge on the ship. Stay tuned - original videos from his stay on board are soon to come!

A Quick History of the Queen Mary - by Liam Schofield (age 10)

What did the Queen Mary do in her years of service?

The Queen Mary, built in July 28, 1934, was the grandest ship of her time. Nearly twice as long as the Titanic, the Queen Mary was only for the richest people in any path she crossed.

During WWII, She had lost all her elegance to become a troop transport ship, carrying over 16,000 troops on each voyage. Because of the Queen Mary's gray camouflage, she was nicknamed the "Gray Ghost." Once while trying to evade Nazi troop ships, the Queen Mary collided with a small ship, known as the Curacoa.

After the war, The Queen Mary was finally restored to her original splendor. When transatlantic liners become out-of-date due to air travel, the Queen Mary was auctioned to Long Beach, California for 3.4 million dollars. Afterwards, she was converted into a hotel, and has become haunted, with plenty of attractions.

  • Sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967.
  • The RMS Queen Mary is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Construction of the Queen Mary began in 1930 and was halted in 1931 due to the Great Depression.
  • Construction of the Queen Mary was completed with a loan from the British Government, under the condition that Cunard Line merge with White Star Line.
  • Four times around the shortest deck(the sports deck) equals one mile.
  • Everyone who visited the Queen Mary has stories to tell, including me.
  • The Queen Mary is home to over 600 active ghosts.

Biography of the Queen Mary

Accomodations on the Hotel Queen Mary - by Liam Schofield (age 10)

What's it like staying on board the Queen Mary?

First, I can tell you a little about what the staterooms looked like. Apart from the modern equipment in them, they are still in their old-fashioned glory. Although I still didn't get to stay in a 1st Class suite, I still got a roomy 2nd Class cabin. I saw pictures of the suites, so it wouldn't have mattered, since both the cabins and suites looked the same size, only slightly bigger.

If this is just a quick trip and you only need a place to sleep overnight, then a berth is perfect for you. Although extremely small, berths are at least still original.

If you choose fine dining, the most famous restaurant there (named after the most famous guest)is the award-winning Sir Winston's. The Promenade Cafe offers less formal dining. This is also a place for amateur D.J.s to practice for the radio station:W6RL-W6RO.

The Queen Mary is the perfect place to hold a meeting, wedding, or other business or ceremonial purpose with its ballrooms.

Like ghosts? Love ghost hunting? Well, the Queen Mary is the right place for you! With her seemingly endless mazes of corridors, haunted rooms, and countless amounts of ghosts, the Queen Mary is the perfect place to do some midnight ghost hunting!

I bet that anyone interested in old-fashioned stuff will be attracted to the Queen Mary like a cat to milk! So go on out there and visit the Queen Mary! And then, if you want, take my poll, and tell me how you feel about the Queen Mary!
